Allied health credentials are perishable: every licensing body and every national certifying organization sets a renewal cycle, a continuing education hour requirement, and a renewal fee, and every body retains the authority to discipline credential holders who fall out of compliance. The renewal guides linked below summarize the renewal obligation for each profession tracked on this site, and explain how that base obligation is modified by individual state licensing boards.
Three patterns are worth understanding before reading any individual guide. First, "continuing education" is defined narrowly: only contact hours documented through approved providers count, and self-study hours are typically capped at a fraction of the total. Second, renewal audits are random and automatic — being selected for audit does not imply suspicion of wrongdoing, but inability to produce certificates of completion when audited can result in disciplinary action up to and including credential revocation. Third, late renewal is treated very differently from non-renewal. A short late period typically carries only a reinstatement fee; an extended lapse may require resitting some or all of the original certifying examination.
